- 3 causes

iCloud.com opens one kind of locked note and not the other.

- **Causes:** 3
- **Steps:** 2

**Short answer:** Apple says that if you locked notes with your **device passcode** or Mac login password, **you can't view them on iCloud.com**. Open them on your iPhone, iPad or Mac instead. Notes locked with a **custom password** open on iCloud.com after you enter that password; a reset password only opens notes locked with the new one.

Causes

## Causes, most likely first

| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Locked with device passcode | You chose Use Device Passcode in Notes | Open them on an Apple device |
| Locked with an older custom password | Your current password is rejected | Enter the older password |
| Trying to add or remove a lock | No lock options on iCloud.com | Use Notes on iPhone, iPad or Mac |

2 steps

## Open a locked note on iCloud.com

1. **Go to icloud.com/notes.** Sign in to your Apple Account and open the folder with the note.
2. **Enter the notes password.** Select the locked note and enter the **custom password** you created for locked notes. Others with that password then open too.

Questions

## Locked notes won't open on iCloud.com: questions

### Why can't I see my locked notes on iCloud.com?

If you locked them with your iPhone passcode or Mac login password, Apple says they can't be viewed on iCloud.com. Open them in Notes on an iPhone, iPad or Mac signed in to the same Apple Account. Only notes locked with a custom notes password open in the browser.

### Can I lock or unlock notes on iCloud.com?

You can view and close locked notes there, but Apple says adding a lock, removing a lock, changing the password or resetting it has to be done in Notes on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Locked notes on iCloud.com relock after a period of inactivity or when you close the window.
