- Can't recover

Apple can't recover a custom notes password. Here is exactly what a reset does and doesn't do.

- **Recoverable:** No

**Quick answer:** Apple can't recover a forgotten custom notes password. You can reset it in **Settings › Apps › Notes › Password › Reset Password**, but the new password only applies to notes you lock **afterwards**. Notes locked with the old password stay locked. Try Face ID first if you turned it on.

What a reset does

## Reset vs recover

| | After reset |
| --- | --- |
| Notes you lock from now on | Use the new password |
| Notes locked with the old password | Still need the old password |
| Face ID | Works on notes it was set up for |

Try first

## Try these before you reset

- Face ID or Touch ID on the note
- Your iPhone passcode (if notes use it)
- Older passwords you used
- Your password hint

Questions

## Forgot notes password: questions

### Can Apple recover my notes password?

### What does resetting the notes password do?

It sets a new password for notes you lock afterwards. Notes already locked with the old password still need the old one.

### Can Face ID open a note if I forgot the password?

If Face ID was on for Notes when the note was locked, it may still open it. If it asks for the password, Face ID can't help.
